In May 2026, Safer Steps Chebucto celebrated Nova Scotia Walk Day with students and staff at Sambro Elementary School, bringing active transportation, road safety and community connection together for a morning of walking.
Nearly 140 students, parents/guardians and school staff took part in the inaugural event, getting outside to walk their community while learning about what it means to be a pedestrian in a rural area — and why safe, comfortable places to walk matter.
About the Event
Our Nova Scotia Walk Day event is about more than getting outside for a walk. It’s an opportunity to help children build a relationship with their community, learn about road safety and see walking as a normal and enjoyable way to get around.
The event included:
A community safety walk led by Halifax Regional Police, giving students practical guidance about pedestrian safety and navigating rural roads
Conversations about road safety, visibility and sharing the road
Encouraging students to think about the places they walk, the routes they use and what could make those trips safer
A visit to the Canadian Coast Guard Station, where students took part in a brief discussion about staying safe while walking and spending time near the water
Celebrating walking as a way to stay active, connect with neighbours and experience our community
Helping make people walking more visible on our rural roads
Working Together
The inaugural event was delivered in partnership with Sambro Elementary School, with support from Halifax Regional Police, the Canadian Coast Guard, school staff, community volunteers and local partners who share our commitment to safer, more walkable communities.
Community partnerships are at the heart of Safer Steps Chebucto. Events like this give us an opportunity to bring children, families, schools, first responders and community members into the conversation about active transportation — while reinforcing that our roads and public spaces need to work safely for everyone.
Making It an Annual Tradition
Following the success of our first Nova Scotia Walk Day in 2026, our goal is to make this an annual event in the community.
Each year, we hope to bring local students together to walk, learn and celebrate active transportation while continuing the conversation about what safer rural roads can look like.
By starting these conversations with young people and creating positive experiences around walking, we can help build a culture where active transportation is visible, valued and expected — today and for generations to come.
