Safer Steps Chebucto is a volunteer-led, non-profit organization committed to creating safer, more connected communities through road safety advocacy, public education, community engagement, and collaboration. We work with residents and all levels of government to advance infrastructure improvements, traffic calming, and active transportation, ensuring everyone can move safely from Armdale through to the Pennants in Halifax.

What we're all about
Safer Steps Chebucto is a registered not-for-profit organization working to create safer, better connected communities across the Chebucto Peninsula - from Armdale through to the Pennants. What began as a grassroots effort led by local residents has grown into a collaborative organization working alongside community members, Halifax Regional Municipality, the Province of Nova Scotia, schools, local businesses, and other partners to improve how people move through our beautiful seaside communities.
Every day, residents walk, run, cycle, roll, drive, and gather throughout our coastal communities. Whether it's walking children to school, visiting neighbours, attending community events, supporting local businesses, or simply enjoying the beauty of our coastline, everyone deserves to travel safely.
Yet many of our roads were never designed for the way our communities live today. Missing sidewalks, limited pedestrian infrastructure, high vehicle speeds, and challenging road designs make it difficult—and often unsafe—for people to walk or move outside of a vehicle. As our communities continue to grow, the need for safer, more accessible transportation infrastructure becomes increasingly important.
Our mission is to advocate for practical, community-driven improvements that make our roads safer and more welcoming for everyone. This includes working toward lower speed limits, safer crossings, continuous walking and rolling networks, improved traffic safety measures, and transportation infrastructure that reflects the needs of rural communities.
At its heart, Safer Steps Chebucto is about more than infrastructure. It's about creating communities where people feel connected, children can grow up with greater independence, seniors can remain active, and residents can safely access the places that bring our communities to life.
We believe the best solutions come from the people who live here. Through community engagement, partnerships, and evidence-based advocacy, we're helping shape a safer future for communities from Armdale to the Pennants.

We're working with Halifax Regional Municipality to make Sambro a priority under the Rural Sidewalk Program. By identifying where sidewalks and pedestrian connections are needed most, we're advocating for long-term investments that improve safety, accessibility, and mobility for residents of all ages.

Traffic Calming & Road Safety - Reimagining our Roads for Everyone
We're collaborating with HRM and the Province of Nova Scotia to improve road safety through lower speed limits, thoughtful road design, and traffic calming measures. Our advocacy also supports the implementation of Nova Scotia's new Traffic Safety Act and the pursuit of a Main Street Designation to help create safer, more people-focused streets

The people who live here know these roads best. Through community surveys, public engagement, and conversations with residents, we're identifying safety concerns, documenting lived experiences, and helping ensure future transportation improvements reflect the needs of our communities.

Community Safety Projects - Turning Ideas into Action
As a Local Activator through the Ecology Action Centre, we're delivering projects that make safety more visible and accessible. Current initiatives include Speed Display Signs, wayfinding signage, bike repair stations, community awareness campaigns.
In a separate initiative, we are installing 75 SLOW DOWN signs throughout our area in partnership with District 11 Councillor and Deputy Mayor Patty Cuttell.

NS Walks Day - Celebrating and Encouraging Active Communities
In May 2026, we hosted our inaugural NS Walks Day event in partnership with Sambro Elementary School, Halifax Regional Police, Halifax Regional Municipality, and local elected officials. The event brought students, families, and community leaders together to celebrate active transportation and raise awareness about road safety. Building on its success, we plan to make it an annual community event that encourages walking, strengthens connections, and highlights the importance of creating safer streets for everyone.

Making It Safer to Cross the Road
Crossing the road shouldn't feel unsafe, and in our communities it does. We're identifying priority locations for new crosswalks (like Old Sambro Road at Ketch Harbour Road, as well as Old Sambro Road at West Pennant Road), pedestrian crossing flags (in particular near school zones), and other crossing improvements that help residents safely access schools, community spaces, businesses, beaches, and neighbourhood destinations.
Safer Steps Chebucto is now a registered not-for-profit society, strengthening our ability to build partnerships, secure funding, and advocate for lasting transportation improvements. Together with residents, businesses, community organizations, and all levels of government, we're building momentum for safer communities from Armdale through to the Pennants.
